As part of a week long cruise up and down the Bay, we stopped for a couple of nights in Yorktown and tied up at the Riverwalk Landing. The marina dockmaster was very helpful when docking and checking in. The sturdy floating docks provide ample protection and we did not experience any issues with strong current reported in other reviews. During our most recent visit there were strong winds out of the northeast resulting in some uncomfortable rocking around at the dock. It was manageable, but not as comfortable as our first visit. No need to worry about water depth. We saw at least a 50 foot depth where we were tied up. The marina was not busy and had plenty of room for additional boats. There was some regular traffic from local boaters that stopped in for a couple of hours. I'm sure they came for the restaurants.
The docks are at the heart of the Yorktown waterfront. The bathrooms are close by, but you do have to walk a ways to get to the shower facilities. A public beach area is part of the waterfront and was very popular during our stay. Stores and restaurants line the waterfront and the restaurants seemed to be quite popular with the locals. A complimentary shuttle bus runs a circuitous route with stops in town as well as at the National Battlefield Park. We took the shuttle up to the park headquarters and had a pleasant walk back to the waterfront through the park grounds. We were able to go into some of the buildings and take in some of the memorials.
We were docked across from a large sailing ship that operate tours in Yorktown during the season. We enjoyed watching it come and go a number of times each day. There is a large farmers market just across from the waterfront on Saturday mornings. There were many vendors selling food, gifts and crafts. It was a fun activity and is well worth being in Yorktown on Saturday to take advantage of.
It is an easy cruise up the York River. Plenty of room and plenty of water. The docks are on your port side as you head up the river, just before reaching the Coleman (Rt. 17) Bridge.
We conveniently fueled up at the York River Yacht Haven Marina on the opposite side of the river. The entrance winds a little and you need to obey the markers carefully. The full-service marina has both fuel and pump-out service and was convenient upon our departure.
