City Docks, Washington, NC
Washington, NC is not officially on the ICW, but it is worth a stop if your schedule allows. The town has both free and reservable dock space. The fixed docks have no electric or water, however the reserve docks have both. Dock rental is more economical than most places, however you will probably spend some of that savings in the extra fuel required to get to Washington from the ICW. |
The dockmaster and his dock assistants couldn't be more helpful and friendly. The docks are just a few steps from the center of town, which boasts numerous shops, restaurants, and bars. There is a well-stocked wine store on the main street that also carries crackers and cheeses as well as a few other edibles. We enjoyed a Gin tasting at the distillery and walked away with a few bottles. There is an ice cream shop and a couple of bakeries in the shopping district. There is an Estuarium and Visitors Center right along the waterfront. Our visit happened just before Thanksgiving and the town had most of their Christmas decorations up and music playing in the streets. It was quite festive.
There are two individual bathroom/shower combinations for the marina guests and public restrooms located in the dockmaster's building. Marina guests are able to use the city WiFi which was quite functional during our visit. There is little boat traffic as the marina is located near the end of the waterway, however the local fishermen are out early. It is a no wake zone so there is little issue with boat wakes. The marina has a pumpout station near the dockmaster's office, however we did not use it during this stay.
As mentioned before, it is a fairly long trip up the Pamlico River to get to Washington and then the same trip back to rejoin the ICW. On weekdays you will need to time your departure to avoid the closure of the railroad bridge at the beginning of the waterfront district. It seems to close once per day from around 8:30 till 10:30am.
This is a really delightful stop and worth the detour if your schedule permits.
