Taking a mooring ball in the Annapolis Harbor is definitely one of our favorite activities. We have only used the Spa Creek mooring field as the others are for smaller boats or have been filled when we arrived. The moorings are first-come first-served, but we usually get there early to have the best choice. The City of Annapolis is very inviting to boaters with their many convenient services and facilities. You can use a tender to go ashore, and there are a few places to land, or you can call the Water Taxi for transportation to the town docks and other locations in the area (be sure to check the schedule).
The moorings are kept in good shape and give you some security, even in windy conditions. There is plenty of room between boats and great views all around. The city is very walkable with many shops and restaurants right near the water. Boaters using the mooring balls can take advantage of the washrooms at the dockmaster's office, however we have never utilized them.
There is a pump out boat that will come to your boat for a minimal charge, however you do need to plan ahead and get on the list early at the busy times. We have had both success and failure with the pump out boat. Most of the boaters are very considerate and move through the field at no-wake speed. Annapolis always provides a show, especially when the super yachts are coming and going.
Annapolis is a wonderful place to spend a few days on the water. If there is a negative aspect, it is the maritime traffic and volume of boaters. If you are looking for peace and quiet, this may not be the place to be. You need to be on your toes when the boat traffic is heavy and during busy weekends. Be on the lookout for paddle boarders, kayakers, big boats, little boats, sailboats, power boats, commercial traffic, and tourist related boats such as sightseeing cruises, ferries and the pirate ship. Annapolis is a place to experience it all!
