The Big Wood Cove anchorage on the Wye River is about three quarters of a mile north of the Drum Point anchorage, however it is really one large area with space for many boats to anchor. The Big Wood Cove spot is well- protected from north, east and south winds. Depending on your exact anchor position, stronger north and west winds may lead to some uncomfortable chop as there is plenty of water for the fetch to build up.
We were one of three boats in the area during our visit. There was a trawler anchored when we arrived, and he had the ideal spot, sitting right on top of the Active Captain marker. Since most boaters like their privacy while anchored, I typically leave as much separation as possible and set the anchor in about 10 feet of water near the eastern shoreline, about a third of a mile away. Another boat arrived later in the day and anchored down at the Drum Point anchorage. They were at least a mile away. Needless to say, we all could enjoy our privacy and not be bothered by music or generator noises. Conditions were mild, so we only put out about 60 feet of chain. Holding was very good and there was minimal swing due to consistent winds from the northeast. Our ATT signal showed one or two bars and we received some over-the-air television from Eastern Shore channels.
We had a very quiet stay, both day and night. Our anchorage spot was fairly close to the more narrow bend in the river, but we were not bothered with too many wakes. It may be different on a busy weekend with good weather. As usual, the watermen came out early in the morning to set their crab lines and traps, but they didn't bother us at all. We hauled anchor before they finished up for the day. There were quite a few jellyfish in the anchorage and it was definitely a reason to stay out of the water. We had no big issues with flying bugs, but we did pick up a few flies.
We are continually drawn to the anchorages on the Wye and East Wye Rivers. There are many choices and the surroundings are peaceful due to the Wye Island Nature Preserve. I just wish the jellyfish were not so numerous.
