Trippe Creek/Flatty Cove - Tred Avon River - Oxford

If you are heading to the Oxford area and looking for a nice anchorage, Trippe Creek is worthy of consideration. The anchorage is large, can accommodate a number of boats and is fairly well protected. To get there, head up the Tred Avon River from the Choptank River, pass the town of Oxford on your starboard and the Town Creek. You will pass another anchorage on your starboard identified as Flatty Cove on the charts. After red "6" start heading for green "1" on your right. You will pass through a fairly narrow pass that will lead you into the anchorage.
A number of homes dot the shoreline, but the anchorage was quiet and calm while we were there on a late-September night. We were the only boat in the anchorage. |
We did see a large quantity of some of the largest jellyfish that we have ever seen, and did not even consider going in the water. Other than that, it was a very peaceful setting and one that we will surely return to. We enjoy this type of quiet and solitude out on the water. I imagine it could be quite busy on weekends in the summer.
The anchorage is a little far from Oxford to consider a dinghy ride in to town, so we moved to Flatty Cove for our second night. It wasn't quite as calm as it is a large expanse of water with passing boats and less protection. A number of watermen were out tending their lines early in the morning. We are not particularly bothered by that, but we do wonder why they sometimes set their lines so close to the boat. We usually wave and wish them a good day as we watch them work.
We took the dinghy around the point and into Town Creek where we found the free dinghy dock. It was a bit of climb up to the dock and there were quite a few dinghys tied up, but we were able to manage and had a nice walk around town and lunch at the restaurant overlooking Town Creek. Lunch was followed by dessert at the well-known ice cream shop.
There is an anchorage in Town Creek, but it is limited to just a couple boats. Obviously it is more convenient if you want to spend a lot of time in town.
Oxford is a quiet little Eastern Shore town that is easily walkable and has nice water views all around. There are a number of marinas and boat yards as well as docks for the local watermen. There is a seasonal ferry that runs across the Tred Avon River to Bellevue. We have also stayed at Campbell's Bachelor Point Boatyard at the other end of Oxford. It is one of many options when visiting Oxford.
