Mill Creek - Patuxent River, MD |
Last Visit: August 27, 2025
There are many Mill Creeks scattered around the Bay and we have been to at least two of them. This one is near Solomons off the Patuxent River and an excellent anchorage. We stayed midweek and I imagine it is very crowded on weekends. It is a great option if you want to avoid the active and busy Solomons area. We a quick fuel stop in Solomons before heading to the anchorage. |
You pass Solomons on your starboard, continue up the Patuxent River and go under the bridge. Be sure to check your depth gauge, not for shallows, but for some of the deepest water on the Bay. I saw 120 feet at one point. You will pass Pt. Patience as you make a sharp turn to starboard and won't be able to miss the visible sandbar. Another check of your depth gauge will show that you are in nearly 100 feet of water with the sandbar about 500 feet. Turn to port at Green 9 and follow the channel into Cuckold Creek. After rounding the point to your port you will see the large anchorage area. Due to predictions of strong winds from the south we chose to anchor close in on the southern shore near the Myrtle Point Park wildlife sanctuary.
There was only one cruising boat in the anchorage that night, so it was very quiet, however you will hear and see activity from the homes along the nearby shorelines. A number of smaller boats came through the anchorage on their way to the homes or just out for an evening cruise. The wakes were minimal, but there were a few.
We anchored in 12 feet of water with very good holding. The anchor and chain came up with the typical coating of Chesapeake Bay mud. I put out 75' of 3/8" chain with a bridle and we were secure all night. There were quite a few jellyfish in the anchorage, which is typical in this area, so we did not go in the water. We had 1 to 2 bars of ATT reception which worked satisfactorily. There was no over-the-air TV reception in this area and of course no Wifi.

There is a sandy dinghy landing area if you wish to go ashore and walk the trails of Myrtle Point Park. There are a few trails to choose from and they are marked with blazes. You can easily pull up a trail map on your phone. We hiked for a little while before deciding the mosquitos were too annoying and we did not have any bug repellent with us.
This is a very nice anchorage if you are looking to just get away for a night or two, or if you are on your way to another location. If it is a stopover on your way to another destination, be advised that it will take a while to travel from the Bay into the anchorage and back out again, however you will good access to the services in Solomons which may be of benefit.
